Oster Blender Pro 1200 – Any Redeeming Qualities?

The Oster Blender Pro 1200 offers some nice features that aren’t normally found at this price point, such as three preprogrammed blending modes. It also includes a few additional attachments which expand the overall functionality of the machine. Do these features and additions make this the best blender at this price then?

Oster Pro 1200 blenderThere are obviously plenty of other alternatives within the same range. I’ll try to review what makes this blender stand apart from the rest. I know how important it is to get a blender that includes the features and accessories you want. Let’s check out the performance of this machine to start things off.

Performance

This Oster blender has a rating of up to 1,200 watts, hence its lazy name. You have enough power here to crush raw ice for smooth frozen drinks or prepare thick recipes like cookie dough. The 6-point blades spin in opposite directions to help give even more blending power. The design combination of the blades and the powerful motor give the machine the ability to perform many different blending/mixing tasks.

Oster smoothie jarBlending in the XL 24oz smoothie cup targets the power even more due to its smaller size. I’ve read that people have successfully blended kale, chia seeds, and other typically difficult ingredients without leaving large bits in the mix. It doesn’t seem like it can perform as well as a Blendtec or Vitamix…. but this is priced at a fraction of the cost of one of those. Overall most people seem quite happy with the power it provides.

Design

This is a somewhat compact blender with it only taking up 7 x 7 x 14 inches of space on your kitchen countertop. You should be able to leave the machine out for easy access instead of tucking it away under your lower cabinets. I know I’m personally much more likely to use an appliance if it’s already out on my counter. Even though it would take upwards of 60 seconds to remove something out from underneath. I prefer convenience like most people, especially in the morning.

Having a blender jar with a wide base lets food flow towards the blades more easily, giving you a more consistent blend. The blades themselves are also 50% wider than some other Oster models, coming in at 3 1/2 inches across. These are attached directly to the motor via a metal-to-metal drive system. This is a simple design that gives more durability and is actually under a 10-year warranty. So at the very least hopefully you won’t have any issues with the blade/motor connection.

Functionality

You have many options to choose from on the front of the control panel. There are 3 manual settings: low, medium, and high. These should cover most typical recipes but it won’t give you quite the precision of more expensive blenders. You also have a dedicated pulse button you can use when preparing delicate recipes and don’t want to over blend the mixture. Watch the video below to see a recipe in action.

Probably the most exciting part of the controls are the 3 preprogrammed settings: green/frozen smoothies, food chop/salsa, and milkshakes. These allow you to add your ingredients and let the machine take over the entire blending task. It runs a special cycle that controls the speed of the blades, starting and stopping until it’s complete. This gives you the same results every time you use these settings. It’s definitely a convenient feature and isn’t normally found on a blender in this price range. I’d say this is what sets the Oster blender apart the most.

Accessories

I mentioned earlier that this comes with a few additional accessories that help give the blender more functionality. I’ll start with the extra large smoothie jar. It has a capacity of 24oz, which is basically a double serving size. It’s perfect to use for protein shakes, or milkshakes if you’re more into that sort of thing. There’s a travel lid included so you can blend right in the cup and be on the go without any hassle.

Oster food processorAnother accessory you’ll receive is a 5-cup (40oz) food processing bowl. This is why the blender is marketed as a 2-in-1 machine. It’s perfect for slicing, dicing, and chopping ingredients. There’s a stainless steel slicing disk and chopping blade included. You can use this to make cookie dough, hummus, and more.

Finally, you have the standard 6-cup (48oz) Boroclass glass jar. This is what you’ll prepare larger recipes in, maybe for you and a special someone or family members. There are a lot of really good soup recipes online you could try in large batches for example. It also works well for making large batches of frozen cocktails.

Conclusion

The Oster Blender Pro 1200 has a pretty powerful motor to handle a variety of tough ingredients. It’ll blend through raw ice with or without liquid according to the company. It also comes with a few nice attachments to make the machine more versatile. Use the food processing bowl to prepare doughs, the smoothie jar for shakes, and the standard jar for regular blender recipes. Plus you have the 3 preprogrammed modes that give you consistent blending results every time. It offers a good amount of value for the cost.

There’s a 3-year satisfaction guarantee from the Oster company and a 10-year warranty on only the all-metal-drive system. The part that connects the blades to the motor. This is something to be aware of as the wording makes it seem like the warranty of the entire machine is 10 years, but it isn’t.

If you’re willing to spend a little extra money, I’d probably tell you to check out the Ninja Mega Kitchen System as a better alternative. It comes with two 16oz smoothie cups, 72oz blender jar, 48oz food processing bowl, and offers 1500 watts of power versus the 1200 in the Oster 1200. The only negative would be the lack of automatic presets and its higher cost but I think it’s a better blender overall.
